Establishing a diverse and inclusive environment leads to a stronger, more versatile team, and we take pride in the diversity of our workforce. Safeway’s diversity strategy is built directly into our business goals, particularly when it comes to giving you experiences and service so you are extremely satisfied. Our view of diversity covers the many ways our employees’ skills, experiences and perspectives are different. We are a top employer for people with disabilities.

Safeway has embedded diversity into performance appraisals to keep all leaders accountable. We conduct annual reviews of progress in terms of hiring and promoting women and minorities into management positions. Our mission is to gain a competitive advantage by attracting and retaining the best talent and engaging our employees’ skills to increase customer and team loyalty.

We provide incentives for employee values that align with our diversity policy, which is based upon equal employment opportunities and prohibits discrimination. Managers and supervisors participate in workshops that emphasize integrating diversity and inclusion skills into daily business operations and enhance communication between men and women.

As a result of our diversity and inclusion efforts, Safeway scored 100% in the Human Rights Campaign Buyer’s Guide and Corporate Equality Index. These indices focus on company policies regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals, such as partner or spousal inclusion within benefits plans.
