Consumers Energy and CMS Energy Chief Executive Officer Patti Poppe today told lawmakers Michigan’s new energy law provides the power to shape the state’s success for years to come. In testimony to the state House Energy Committee, Poppe praised energy reforms adopted by the Legislature in late-2016 with strong bipartisan support. The law went into effect last month. The new regulatory framework is paving the way for significant investments in the state’s energy infrastructure and allowing Michigan — not federal regulators — to make the key decisions about how to meet its energy needs.

“The new energy law sets the stage for us to partner and find the best energy solutions for Michigan businesses and families,” Poppe said. “Michigan has economic momentum and can participate in bringing jobs back to America by providing consistent energy policy.”

The new energy policy helps Michigan maintain an affordable, reliable supply of energy while ensuring we have the electricity we need, Poppe said. The law also protects the environment by encouraging more renewable energy and reducing energy use through demand response and energy efficiency.

“We have the opportunity of a generation to design our energy future and we shouldn’t defer to federal regulators to set the direction for Michigan.” Poppe said. “Together, here in Michigan, we can assure that Michigan wins.”

Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest utility, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
