The Portland Timbers Official Mocktail

The Portland Timbers have an official mocktail!

Three judges convened to choose the final winner in the ongoing Timbers’ Mocktail Competition this past Saturday, October 25 at a Timbers’ viewing party at the Rose and Thistle Pub in Portland when the Timbers played FC Dallas. (Timbers won, by the way.)

The Oregon Liquor Control CommissionPortland Timbers, and el Jimador Tequila sponsored the mocktail contest in conjunction with KPTV, Fox-12, as a way to provide alternatives to promote drinking in moderation as well as options for those who wish not to drink. A mocktail is a non-alcoholic drink with the party appeal of its cocktail cousin.

The Oregon Bartenders Guild submitted twelve mouth-watering non-alcoholic (mocktail) recipes, which KPTV viewers narrowed down to the top three finalists: The Timber Tantrum, The Multnomah Mule, and the Soccer City Raspberry Lemonade.

Nathan Gerdes, Vice President of the Oregon Bartenders Guild, explained that the guild was more than happy to contribute a dozen recipes from its members. "We're professionals in the Guild," he said. "Our members are serious about responsible consumption, and can craft a delicious mocktail just as well as their alcoholic brethren when requested. These are some delicious examples of mocktails from some of the best bartenders in the city."

The winning mocktail will be featured during 2015 Cascadia home matches as the official mocktail of the Portland Timbers. Finalist recipes and winner are posted on the agency’s websiteFacebookTwitter and Google+.

"We’re very thankful for our partnership with the Portland Timbers and el Jimador," says OLCC Deputy Director Merle Lindsey. “Dedicating the winning recipe as the official mocktail of the 2015 Timbers season helps promote responsible drinking in a way that all the fans can support."

"As the official sponsor of the MLS, we are proud to be a part of the mocktail contest to promote responsible drinking," said Mark Grindstaff, Group Brand Director for Brown-Forman Tequilas. "Mocktails provide a responsible solution to those looking to drink moderation."
