Summary

Raised by a single mother, eight-year-old Russell Berger couldn't always join in extracurricular activities due to their cost. But then the Boy Scouts of America's Minsi Trails Council extended a hand to Russell through its Scoutreach program, a school-based program that teaches character and leadership to at-risk boys in Monroe County.

"The Scoutreach program is so cool because I get to learn about the great outdoors and help my community at the same time,” says Russell.

“Troop leaders come and meet me right at my school once a week. We join in community service projects together. In the process, we also learn how to be prepared, obedient, cheerful and brave.”
