With headline-grabbing news about pipeline approvals, reversals of climate change policies, and the nomination of a Secretary of Energy who originally wanted to abolish that department, it’s important to remember that plans for a renewable energy future continue to be made.

Exhibit A: in Arizona, the owners of the largest coal-fired power plant in the West are considering closing down that facility. Low natural gas prices and the rising costs of using coal are making it too expensive to operate. Exhibit B: lawmakers in Massachusetts have proposed a bill that would require that state to adopt 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

It joins the city of San Diego, which has also pledged to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. And the trend is global. Exhibit C: in Scotland, ministers have announced a new energy strategy to achieve a low- or zero-carbon emissions status for half of the country’s energy needs by 2030.
