With a high demand for diesel mechanics throughout the country, Republic Services is investing in its future workforce by partnering with colleges and vocational schools, such as the South Louisiana Community College and the college’s Diesel-Powered Equipment Technology program, to provide internships and scholarship opportunities.

Last spring, Republic donated one commercial front-end load truck to the SLCC program, located at the college’s T. H. Harris campus in Opelousas. Republic recently announced the first scholarship recipient, SLCC student Alex Ardoin.

“Diesel mechanics are critical in our line of business,” said James Richard, general manager at Republic Services. “The donated truck will allow hands-on experience for SLCC students on a piece of equipment they would work on regularly at our company."

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students in this high-demand program at our college,” said Lana Fontenot, SLCC’s director of development. “Not only is Republic investing in our students’ education in the near-term, but there are potential long-term career opportunities with the company during and after their college experiences.”

To qualify for the Republic Services Scholarship at SLCC, students must attend South Louisiana Community College and major in the college’s Diesel-Powered Equipment Technology program, along with meeting other standard criteria. South Louisiana Community College is a comprehensive community college with more than 10,000 students that operates campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville and Ville Platte.
