CAMPAIGN: Connect A Million Minds

By Leah Gutstadt, Senior Manager, Strategic Philanthropy

In my role at Time Warner Cable, I oversee national partnerships for Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), Time Warner Cable’s commitment to inspire the next generation of problem solvers by introducing young people to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). As part of Connect a Million Minds, we created STEM in Sports – a campaign designed to get young people excited about STEM by connecting these subjects to the sports they love. With STEM in Sports, I have been able to expand the realm of partners I work with beyond non-profits to include professional sports teams, athletes and other funders.

Last month, we introduced new STEM in Hockey content to teach kids about friction, shooting angles and why exactly that Zamboni is a critical part of the game. Helping us this time around are the Anaheim Ducks and their captain, Ryan Getzlaf, with support from CAMM strategic partner the Samueli Foundation, a major champion of math and science initiatives. Henry Samueli, co-founder of Broadcom and the Foundation’s namesake and benefactor, also happens to be the owner of the Anaheim Ducks. When the Samueli Foundation saw the traction we were getting around our STEM in Sports concept, they approached us about working with the Ducks to add hockey to our portfolio. We were thrilled, given their experience with the successful "Science of Hockey" exhibit at the Discovery Science Center in Orange County, CA a few years prior, an effort they made possible. With this partnership, we are continuing to expand on our proven model of highlighting the science and math behind various sports.

Visit the Connect a Million Minds website to learn more about the STEM and hockey connection, and download the free parents and educators guide for fun games to play with hockey-loving kids.
