September 29, 2016 /3BL Media/ - To demonstrate the beverage sector’s continued pursuit of advancing water stewardship, today the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) released a refreshed framework definition for World Class Water Stewardship in the Beverage Industry.  Originally developed in 2006 and updated in 2010, BIER members once again collaborated in outlining six leadership principles and the associated qualities that define excellence in water stewardship.

This new framework outlines the essentials for sound stewardship and serves as an aspirational look toward what is possible in the future. The result is a common beacon that can help guide and inspire companies to continually improve and to Act, Engage and Influence on matters related to water stewardship.

“This marks the tenth year of BIER’s work in leading the beverage industry to accelerate to impact on relevant dimensions of sustainability,” states Nick Martin, Associate Director of BIER. “Best practices in water stewardship have been core to our mission since inception, and we are pleased to mark this anniversary with a renewed commitment to and framework for sound water stewardship.”

Recognizing the importance of this precious resource to the long-term health and vitality of people, communities, businesses and ecosystems throughout the world, BIER members have worked together since 2006 to share innovative approaches, develop tools and guidance, publish benchmarking results, and define standards for leadership within the beverage sector value chain and beyond.

Beverage companies are in a unique position to catalyze global water stewardship by influencing their many stakeholders, including suppliers, customers, governments and communities worldwide. BIER members recognize the shared nature of water challenges, and that no single government, organization or section of society can address these challenges alone. As such members are committed to working in collaboration to help achieve the United Nations Global Goal Six on ‘ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’.
