The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD), selected Tetra Tech to design the Ground Water Reliability Improvement Project (GRIP). Tetra Tech used multiple technologies to treat secondary effluent to a near distilled water quality and re-inject into the groundwater basin. The effluent will be treated at a higher level than drinking water with less impurities or constituents in the water, allowing for a high-quality groundwater recharge.

Tetra Tech’s design included ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultra violet technologies. The plant is designed to treat 14 million gallons of ground water per day and is expandable to 28 million gallons per day. The facility includes an operations and learning center to teach the local community about water reuse and water education and includes space for events or seminars. The design also incorporates a stream that runs through the property and mimics the local river traveling into a recharge basin, which can be used as a learning tool.

Once completed, GRIP could virtually eliminate the region’s current demand for imported water.
