Kansas City, MO, July 14, 2014 /3BL Media/ - U.S. Ambassador to Honduras, Lisa Kubiske, visited Children International’s Neal Family Community Center in San Pedro Sula to observe the success of USAID-supported programs and recognize outstanding “Community Heroes.”

In Honduras, USAID programs provided by Children International, among many other things, expand the basic education and skills training for at-risk youth and adults. While visiting The Neal Family Community Center, Mrs. Kubiske observed the following USAID-supported programs: A Ganar, a youth workforce development program that utilizes soccer to help at-risk youth develop life skills such as teamwork, communication, discipline and respect; IMPACTOS, a program that equips youth with leadership and entrepreneurship skills for the peace and revitalization of communities at social risk; and Jóvenes Saludables, a program that educates youth on drug and alcohol abuse prevention, and on reproductive and sexual health, including the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and HIV.

Mrs. Kubiske also attended the “Community Heroes” event, where she presented awards to outstanding local volunteers who were celebrated for their efforts in helping facilitate these programs. Among those winning an award was Children International volunteer Elizabeth Arita, who has been a volunteer with Children International for more than 25 years and has volunteered her time to support the IMPACTOS program.
