October 6, 2014 /3BL Media/ - UnitedHealthcare is providing funding in support of Indo Jax Surf Charities’ surf camps, which will enable the nonprofit to expand its surfing programs for children with autism, Wounded Warriors, military veterans and their families. Indo Jax Surf Charities believes exposure to the ocean environment has profound healing properties and can build self-esteem and confidence. UnitedHealthcare’s support of Indo Jax Surf Charities was made possible through CBS EcoMedia’s WellnessAd program.

To kick off this partnership, UnitedHealthcare employees volunteered on Saturday at Indo Jax’s Family Surf Day at Wrightsville Beach. Volunteers helped instructors in the water and managed fun-filled beach activities with children and families. Hosts included Jack Viorel, co-founder of Indo Jax Surf Charities, and Garland Scott, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Carolinas and Georgia.

“The demand for our camps has been increasing at a rate that is really difficult for us to keep up with,” Viorel said. “Purchasing and maintaining the specialized equipment we use, as well having a skilled and well-staffed team, is costly. Every year we fear having to drop camps because of funding. This sponsorship alleviates that, allowing us to continue to grow and keep up with demand. With UnitedHealthcare’s assistance, we can get the equipment and instructors we need to serve more and more people.”

UnitedHealthcare’s support will fund much-needed camp materials and supplies for Indo Jax including tandem surf boards, T-shirts, sunblock and hats, as well as Wounded Warrior and autism surf camps for two years. Nearly 80 families will benefit from UnitedHealthcare’s support, which equates to approximately 750 hours of surf instruction for the participants.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to support Indo Jax Surf Charities and its work in helping autistic children and Wounded Warriors heal and enhance their well-being,” Scott said.

“Thanks to UnitedHealthcare’s financial support and the dedication of its employee volunteers, we are profoundly improving the quality of life for autistic children, Wounded Warriors, and families of military veterans,” said Paul Polizzotto, founder and president, CBS EcoMedia. “As a lifetime surfer myself, I’m confident that the therapeutic powers of the ocean will significantly enhance the health of so many individuals and families that Indo Jax Surf Charities serves.”

This project is the latest in UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer initiative, whose mission is to inspire service and encourage volunteerism.
