Dell believes technology has a powerful role in helping others to benefit the world. So two years ago we put a strategic plan behind that belief: our Dell 2020 Legacy of Good Plan. We’re committed to achieving 21 goals by 2020 that bring social and environmental objectives together with our business objectives to create value for our customers as well as our people and the planet.

In releasing our second annual report on our 2020 Legacy of Good Plan, we are excited to share measurable results that demonstrate this shared value.

For some of our goals, we’re reaching them more quickly while others are challenging us to be innovative to achieve our objectives. The plan remains our constant, and it drives us to dig deep to create a positive future. Our video here shows how we’re doing that.

Examples from our work in fiscal year 2015 include:

  • We’re the world’s largest technology recycler. We’ve collected more than 1.4 billion pounds of e-waste since 2007. That’s 71 percent of the way toward our goal of recovering 2 billion pounds by 2020.
  • This year, we’ve gone a step further toward our goals by using our own recycled computer plastics in new Dell products. In FY15, we launched our closed-loop plastics supply chain and by year-end had recycled nearly 2.9 million pounds of those plastics back into new Dell products.
  • Dell customers throw away less and can recycle more because Dell is a leader in sustainable packaging innovations — like upcycling wheat straw into boxes used for shipping our products. We’ve also reduced the amount of material needed to safely ship products, avoiding more than 31 million pounds of packaging and saving $53 million in the process since 2009.
  • Customers increasingly care about their energy consumption and we’re listening. We’ve delivered a 30 percent reduction in energy intensity across the full Dell portfolio since 2011, which will result in significant savings for our customers. For example, the University of Massachusetts Lowell implemented Dell desktop virtualization solutions that helped reduce energy bills by nearly 50 percent while at the same time giving students greater access to the software they need to learn.
