Cincinnati, OhioJuly 30, 2014 /3BL Media/ Volkswagen Group of (VWGoA), Inc. continued its long-standing partnership with the National Urban League (NUL) during the 2014 NUL Conference in Cincinnati by mobilizing hundreds of conference attendees and residents to volunteer their time to assist underserved children and families.

VWGoA’s signature event at the NUL conference, called the “Volunteer Zone,” enables conference attendees and local residents to volunteer their time assembling back-to-school kits and family kits for children, teachers, unemployed individuals and other members of the local, underserved community in Cincinnati.

This year, the Volunteer Zone assembled and donated 500 kits consisting of healthy snacks, school supplies, hygiene products and other items to the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati's Avondale After School Program and the Carl H. Lindner YMCA that provide hot meals, enrichment activities and homework assistance to students in the Avondale Community.  This event marks the fifth year that Volkswagen has partnered with NUL to lead a community service initiative associated with the national conference.

“Volkswagen values our partnership with the National Urban League and the opportunity it provides to make a positive difference in underserved communities across the country,” said Machelle Williams, General Manager, Diversity and Corporate Social Responsibility. “The Volunteer Zone sends a positive and resounding message to local residents that we care and are committed to the communities where we live and work.”

VWGoA employees were joined by Marc H. Morial, President & CEO, National Urban League, during the Volunteer Zone activities.

"For the past five years, the National Urban League and Volkswagen have partnered on a vital component of our Annual Conference - the Volunteer Zone in our Expo Hall," Morial said. "Service is a bedrock principle of the Urban League Movement, and the Volunteer Zone engages hundreds of volunteers on-site to demonstrate the kind of service in action that happens in the more than 300 communities that we serve every day."

Volkswagen Group of America encourages employees nationwide to participate in community service and volunteer efforts through its internal “Get Involved” campaign, which includes special incentives such as paid time off to volunteer and company matching for charitable donations.
