As autumn rolls around we put the spotlight on grocery clients who are giving back to the communities they serve. We have picked some of the highlights from their various giving programs to share with you- we hope their good work will inspire you in your quest for making an impact in your community! 

Wegman's Gives Big from the Start

Wegmans in Owings Mills' new Foundry Row shopping center has already had its first major discount — 100 percent off 18,000 pounds of food for six community nonprofits. The donations include peanut butter, tuna fish, canned vegetables and other nonperishables. The Wegmans organization always attempts to make a donation like this when opening a new location.In addition to the food donation, Wegmans also cut a check to the United Way of Central Maryland for $10,000. 

Raley's Donation Key Ingredient for Urban Farm

Raley’s Supermarkets has increased its continued support of the Winters, Calif.-based Center for Land-Based Learning, donating $25,000 toward the ground-breaking of West Sacramento’s newest urban farm.The Farm at the Barn will increase access to fresh local produce, promote community sustainability, encourage volunteerism and stimulate educational opportunities.  A percentage of the produce grown will benefit Food For Families and create a built in market for beginning farmers to sell their crops.

H-E-B Helps Fight Hunger

H-E-B donated an $18,000 check to Food Care Center in Killeen, which provides meals to more than 32,000 families a year. The donation was thanks to H-E-B's Help End Hunger campaign. The campaign raised almost $750,000 this summer. The money raised was divided among 20 Texas food banks that are a part of the Feeding America initiative.The $18,000 check will help the organization make more than 90,000 meals.

Brookshire's Text Contest Good for Schools

Brookshire Grocery Co. will donate more than $165,000 to high schools in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas during the upcoming football season as part of its ExtraPoint Program, which gives each school a chance to score more than $10,000 in prizes. Through Nov. 1, more than 100 Brookshire’s stores will donate $1,000 to a local high school during a home football game. Schools also can compete for prizes up to $10,000 through the program’s keyword text contest. Visit here to view a list of text keywords, school rankings and official rules.
