Norfolk Southern’s health and wellness program, WellNS, encourages employees to get regular medical screenings, become active, quit tobacco use, and make nutritious food choices.

WellNS benefits communities as well. PowerTrain, a popular WellNS “Get Active” program, offers employees a way to participate in healthy activities while benefitting health-related organizations and other community nonprofits. When 10 or more NS employees complete a PowerTrain event in support of qualifying groups and nonprofits, the company donates $1,000 on the team’s behalf to the organization.

In fall 2015, NS employees across the railroad’s 22-state system formed PowerTrain’s first national team to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The team, including employees from NS’ Norfolk, Va., headquarters, Atlanta, Birmingham, Ala., Chattanooga, Tenn., and the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region, raised more than $6,000 in the fight against a disease that afflicts an estimated 5.3 million Americans.

“Everyone wins with PowerTrain events – our company, our employees, our customers, and our communities,” said Donne Jones, WellNS health promotions manager, who participated in the Alzheimer’s walk. “It’s a fantastic feeling to be at the starting line of a 5K race or walk with colleagues who also are giving their time and resources to represent NS and support a charity. It makes me proud to be a Thoroughbred.”
