Make 2015 the Year of You

Sobering headline from an article in the Washington Post: “In 10 Years, Your Job Might Not Exist”. When you consider that many of today’s jobs were unheard of twenty or even ten years ago and that the speed of innovation is increasing at warp speed, it is almost a foregone conclusion that the skills needed for work in the year 2025 will be very different than the skills of today.

So, what does that mean to you? Unless you are planning to retire between now and then, it means you need to think how you should prepare for the evolution of the job market.

There is, of course, the added complexity that there is really no way of knowing what jobs will exist in ten years. Most likely, many are not even invented yet. There are, however, some skills that are timeless, regardless of what technological advancements are made. One of those is communication skills. In the past, that simply meant being able to write and speak effectively. Today, with social media being ubiquitous in our culture, what you write and how you speak can be on display across multiple platforms and live in perpetuity.

You would not have the job you have today if your communication skills weren’t already exceptional, so you might be thinking, “Ha, ha Mark – I got that covered.”  Not so fast.

What about your brand? 

While all of us are very aware of our company’s brand, not so many of us pay attention to our own personal brand.

Your brand today, and I believe going forward, will be key to your employability. How you are perceived, what is on the internet about you, how you’ve contributed to blogs or what you’ve tweeted, all becomes part of your identity. It also, more and more, is what employers look at for new hires and when considering promotions.

There will be many things in 2015 and beyond that are beyond your control. Your brand is not one of them. Make 2015 the year you take control of your brand.
