In light of the sudden surge in global eco awareness, we find the exploration of sustainability concepts, particularly in business, is still largely in reaction to an undesirable outcome rather than a pursued business gain.   Companies and their executives are observed in these cases to be engaged in a very different business sustainability conversation.  

The question then becomes: Does a positive and negative perspective lead to two very different business sustainability paths? 
 
Experience has shown that companies often discover the value of business sustainability through specific application, and this visibility is often more easily observed as sustainability concepts are applied directly to specific areas of concern with a current business process and practice.  The organization is thereby focusing on the past.
