Mining in Panama: Lessons in CSR Best Practices - CBSR and EDC Webinar
Thursday, May 12, 2011, 1:00 - 2:00 PM EST / 10:00 - 11:00 AM PST

Recently, CBSR facilitated a multi-stakeholder workshop in Panama, hosted by the Canadian Embassy and including content from Export Development Canada. The workshop focused on exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by companies entering into an emerging mining industry in Panama, and best practice examples of how different mining companies have approached the issues of community relations, biodiversity and inclusive environmental monitoring.

This webinar, sponsored by Export Development Canada, will share the key findings from the workshop and generate a discussion among exploration and mining companies on the challenges and opportunities associated with operating in jurisdictions that do not have long mining histories and where no associated legal frameworks exist. Participants will be asked to provide feedback on how such challenges might be addressed based on their experiences in other jurisdictions.

Participants will learn about:
• communicating with and educating stakeholders
• filling the information void
• working without a defined leagal framework
• monitoring activities - who needs to be involved
• building relationships between indigenous communities and other stakeholder groups
• understanding government's role

Signi Schneider, Chief CSR Advisor, EDC
Stephanie Garrett, Senior CSR Advisor, CBSR
