CSR Minute headlines for Thursday, January 7th

Is LEED Certification spreading rapidly in China? According to the China Daily, hundreds of new construction projects in that country are achieving Gold LEED Certification, and at least one project is on track to achieve Platinum LEED status, the highest possible ranking. In an article called “Green, Not Grand,” the newspaper reports that China is using LEED certification as a way to demonstrate its commitment to green initiatives. Observers have called for independent monitoring to ensure continuing compliance with LEED standards.

The Home Depot Foundation has named North Charleston, South Carolina and a nonprofit partner, The Sustainability Institute of South Carolina, a winner of the 2009 Award of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development. More than any other small city in the U.S., North Charleston has taken steps to be livable, affordable, and sustainable, the foundation said last month. The award highlighted Oak Terrace Preserve, a 55-acre, green neighborhood project that exemplified best practices in housing, natural resources, and land use and development, and that serves as a national model for sustainability.
