Newport International, the maker of Jack’s Catch and Pacific Cove brands of seafood, has launched a sustainability initiative to end the harvesting of undersized crabs. Newport International and 10 other  companies of the National Fisheries Institute’s Crab Council are funding the initiative with $500,000 annually. In addition, the Council has received three grants from the World Bank’s Allfish program. Crab Council members account for more than 60 percent of the U.S. market for imported Blue Swimming Crab.

The platform of the Liberal Party of Canada for the upcoming elections includes a green home renovation tax break. The proposal is for a permanent $400 million (Canadian) tax credit to help Canadians pay for energy-saving home renovations. Individuals would be allowed to deduct up to $13,500 (Canadian) from their federal tax, and the credit is refundable, meaning those who do not have enough income to pay taxes would receive a check equal to their tax credit. The proposal is aimed at reducing energy use and costs, and boosting sales of alternative energy products and services.
