The Kit Kat factory in the British town of York has achieved zero waste in its operations. Producing over one billion Kit Kat candy bars each year, the plant has realized savings of $200,000 due to the elimination of local landfill fees. Revenues were also generated from 800,000 tons of recyclable materials. Waste that cannot be recycled is incinerated locally to generate electricity. All of parent company Nestles’ factories in the U.K. and Ireland are planned to achieve zero waste operations by 2015.

Lanxess, the German-based specialty chemicals group, has joined the United Nations Global Compact. The company has set targets in climate protection and other areas outlined in the Compact, including human rights, labor standards, and anti-corruption principles. Lanxess has already cut its direct greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 percent worldwide. The U.N. Global Compact now has more than 8,000 members from over 135 countries.
