Unilever will become the largest commercial user of renewable energy in Canada by purchasing electricity from Bullfrog Power, Canada’s green energy provider. Unilever has agreed to purchase 59,000 megawatt hours from Bullfrog, and will power its manufacturing facilities and offices in Ontario, accounting for 90 percent of its Canadian operations, with Bullfrog’s wind-and hydro-produced energy. The initiative is part of Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan, launched in 2010, which aims to cut in half the environmental footprint of the manufacture and use of the company’s products by 2020.

More than 500 delegates attended the 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment in Doha last week. The event was organized by the International Olympic Committee and the Qatar Olympic Committee in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme to establish initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of sporting events. At the conference, UNEP announced that it is signing an agreement with Brazil to assist and support the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, both to be held in Brazil.
