CAMPAIGN: The CSR Minute

CONTENT: Press Release

Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Monday, February 15th:

Wal-Mart has launched its new Sustainability Product Index initiative in Canada, the first market outside the U.S. in which it will be used. The Index, announced in the U.S. last year, is intended to create transparency in the supply chain of the mega-corporation’s 44,000 vendors. This summer, Wal-Mart Canada will send out questionnaires to its suppliers, evaluating their efforts on issues like energy use and material efficiency. The retailer will then create a database on the lifecycle of products, followed by a rating system for consumers. The giant retailer’s Index program is being closely watched by the CSR community for its potential effects on supply chain values and consumer attitudes.

The School of Business at the University of Wisconsin continues to step up its focus on social and environmental factors in business education. The school now offers a Graduate Certificate in Business, Environment, and Social Responsibility, which prepares students to systematically integrate sustainability issues into management decision-making. The Wisconsin MBA, ranked 5th overall in the U.S. among public business schools, is now scored as 15th in the U.S. by the Aspen Institute’s “Beyond Grey Pinstripes” list, a grading of business education that includes social and environmental studies.
