Hello, I’m Gretchen Siegchrist, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Tuesday, August 3rd:

Del Monte Foods is focusing its sustainability strategy on three key areas: waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and water use, and has announced reduction targets to be achieved in each area by 2016. Goals include a 75 percent reduction in waste; a 10 percent reduction in GHG emissions from the company’s manufacturing, warehousing and R & D facilities; a 7 percent reduction in GHG emissions in its transportation network; and a 20 percent reduction in water consumption. Since 2007, Del Monte has reduced waste by almost 70 percent, and water use by 20 percent. Del Monte has also joined the EPA’s Climate Leaders program.

Australian airline Jetstar has joined with SchoolAid, a nonprofit that focuses on benefiting children in disadvantaged Asian communities, to create the Kids Helping Kids Awards to recognize schools-based philanthropy. The overall award winner will receive a cash prize and travel provided by Jetstar, and partners Microsoft and the Cartoon Network will provide a range of technology and entertainment prizes. An estimated $11 million is generated for charities and kids in need by schools-based giving in Australia every year.
