CAMPAIGN: The CSR Minute

CONTENT: Press Release

Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Friday, June 18th:

Global Partnerships, a U.S.-based microfinance investment firm, held a forum last week to present the company’s effort to reduce poverty in Latin America while offering investors a fixed rate of return. Global Partnerships reports that since 2005 it has grown its portfolio from $2.5 million dollars to $39 million dollars, and the number of microfinance institutions in which it invests from 4 to 27. The number of borrowers reached by its partner MFIs have increased from 150,000 to 817,00 over that time. Global Partnership also reported a 100 percent repayment rate from its MFIs.

The Giving USA Foundation, which has measured U.S. philanthropy since 1956, has announced that giving in America dropped for the second straight year in 2009, the second largest single year drop since the oil embargo of the mid-1970s. Foundations pulled in their resources in the face of the recession, with an 8.6 percent decline in giving. By contrast, individual Americans  registered only a small drop of .4 percent. In all, charitable giving declined 3.6 percent in 2009, to $303 billion dollars, down from a total of $315 billion dollars for 2008.
