Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Friday, May 21st:

Siemens, the electronics and electrical engineering company, has named the city of Philadelphia as winner of the third annual Siemens Sustainable Community Award.  The award was presented during the National Conference on Corporate Community Investment, held last week in Houston. The city won for its sustainable plan, Greenworks Philadelphia, a year-long initiative of 15 measureable targets and the 150 steps to achieve them by 2015, all aimed at converting the industrial city into a clean-technology hub.

Researchers in China have discovered an use for cigarette butts. The chemicals extracted from discarded butts can protect a kind of steel widely used in the oil industry from corrosion. Rusting steel pipes are a major environmental concern—as well as a major replacement cost—for oil producers. The discovery could make the prospect of recycling cigarette butts financially profitable, especially in China: one-third of the world’s cigarettes are consumed in that country. An estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are discarded into the environment worldwide every year.
