Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Thursday, September 2nd:

Subway, the restaurant chain, has presented sustainability awards to three of its vendors at its annual convention. The companies recognized are Pactive’s PWP Industries of California, Matosantos Commercial Corp. of Puerto Rico, and Close Loop Recycling of Australia. The three  businesses were recognized for their commitment to creating a sustainable environment in every aspect of their business. Subway operates at 33,000 locations in 91 countries.

NextEra Energy reports that its carbon emissions rate has fallen by a third over the last decade, as a result of significant investment in low- and no-carbon power generation. The company’s just-released 2010 Sustainability Report says that its CO2 emissions rate declined from 985 pounds per megawatt-hour to 657 pounds per megawatt-hour from 2000 to 2009. During that time, NextEra invested several billions of dollars in building the country’s largest wind energy business while also adding a significant amount of new combined-cycle natural gas capacity. NextEra Energy continues to be one of the most profitable companies in the industry, outperforming the energy sector as a whole by 119 percent over the ten years ending December, 2009.
