ConAgra has announced the winners of its 2012 Sustainable Development Awards, an internal program to reward innovative approaches to sustainability that produce tangible business results. Collectively, the more than 100 entries reduced carbon emissions by 43,000 metric tons; eliminated 61,000 tons of landfill waste and 4,800 tons of packaging material; and conserved 295 million gallons of water. The projects also delivered more than $28 million in savings. ConAgra started the Sustainable Development Awards in 1992 to encourage its employees to look for ways to eliminate waste, reduce energy, and conserve water.

VolunteerMatch is offering 74,000 chances for volunteers to make a difference at nonprofit organizations for National Volunteer Week. The volunteer network is promoting new ways to give back, including Toyota’s partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation; 3,400 opportunities to fight hunger, outlined in a “hunger need” map supported by the Walmart Foundation; People Saving Pets, which mobilizes pet lovers; and Exelon Corporation’s series of employee-led service projects. Collectively, volunteers contributed more than eight billion hours of work in the U.S. last year.
