Traditionally, the underlying goal of any compensation structure has been to attract, motivate and retain good staff.  However, choosing the right compensation structure to achieve a specific business objective can be difficult, especially when business drivers are not aligned with the desires of the key individual a company is seeking to retain.  The question becomes: how do companies align business and individual interests

Despite the myriad of compensation options, pay for performance is often the one which receives the most attention.  Performance pay is a combination of base pay with variable compensation based on certain performance criteria. It is a widely used in particular industries, based on the concept that pay can motivate job performance, increase employee effectiveness, and align business goals.
