The U.S. EPA’s collaboration program with the transportation industry, SmartWay, promotes creative approaches to reducing the energy and environmental impact of transport. Participating companies are asked to benchmark their current freight operations, identify strategies to reduce their carbon emissions, track emissions reductions, and project future improvements. Strategies employed can include using more efficient tires, lowering speeds, reducing idling, and improving logistics, as well as improving packaging and driver education.

According to the EPA, since 2004, SmartWay partners have saved 50 million barrels of oil, the equivalent of taking over 3 million cars off the road for an entire year, and saving $6.1 billion in fuel costs.
