A team of representatives from Eastman participated in Lipscomb University’s Sustainable Business Summit that was held in Nashville, March 27-28, 2012. During the event, Eastman was awarded the Lipscomb University ‘Sustainable Product of the Year’ award for its GEM™ 2-ethylhexl palmitate.

Eastman GEM technology redefines sustainable manufacturing processes for the cosmetics and personal care industries. The technology was developed by Neil Boaz and Stephanie Clendennen and utilizes enzymes and closely controlled manufacturing conditions to eliminate high temperatures, strong acids, and unwanted by-products. Advantages of GEM™ 2-ethylhexl palmitate include reductions in:

  • CO2 emissions by 52%
  • Energy consumption by 59%
  • Waste by 93%
  • Process water consumed by 100%

“The category for Sustainable Product of the Year was a highly competitive one,” said Marc Schurger, director, sustainability strategic initiatives. “GEM technology was awarded the top spot among the other contenders; even surpassing some of Eastman’s other products. This is not just great recognition for our company but also showcases the innovation and dedication of the cosmetics and personal care team to developing more sustainable manufacturing practices.

This was Lipscomb’s fifth anniversary of the summit and was focused on providing organizations with insights to grow their business through sustainable practices. The organization works to explore business models, practices and opportunities for businesses to stay competitive, improve profitability and grow market valuation. More than 100 regional innovative business leaders were on-hand for the event.
