How can investing in a few hundred small farms in Mexico’s Jalisco mountain range help a large multinational company?  Ask PepsiCo and its sourcing initiatives.

Socially responsible sourcing is a commitment to increased transparency of ongoing actions that extend beyond the walls of the company.  As a subset to a larger movement toward ‘sustainable’ supply chain management, companies have started to make more responsible decisions and take more responsible actions on the environmental and human rights issues that reside within their sourcing operations.  Going beyond words, leaders are taking defined action within the supply chain to drive mutually beneficial change.
 
Leveraging PepsiCo as one of many examples, the company is currently working with corn farmers in Mexico to implement a program that adds value to both its own operations and the local community in which it operates.  As part of its community commitments, PepsiCo seeks to:
 
•    Apply proven sustainable agricultural practices on its farmed land.
 
•    Provide funding, technical support and training to local farmers.
 
•    Promote environmental education and best practices among its associates and business partners.
