STAMFORD -- The GE Foundation's annual review of the school district's practices released last week lauds new curriculum efforts while citing disconnects between Stamford's central office and its 20 schools. "We feel good about the progress made, and as with everything there's more to do," GE Foundation President Bob Corcoran said Monday.

The report cites 13 accomplishments the district has made over the course of the past year, several of which focus on math and science curriculum development and implementation of a standardized curriculum throughout the district, as well as observable evidence of these initiatives reaching the classrooms. "Students are highly engaged in their learning and there has been increased critical thinking and problem solving, especially at the elementary level," the report states.

But these accomplishments are not equivalent to a mission accomplished, according to Corcoran. "Every child in Stamford Public Schools deserved a quality education so that when they leave, they are college- or career-ready and they'll have a lifetime of opportunities ahead based on a quality education. Until that happens, we shouldn't take victory laps," Corcoran said. "But we can stop for a breather, and thank the teachers and (former superintendent) Dr. Starr and the work they've done. But it's not over until the 15,000 students in Stamford get a great quality outcome."
