You may be wondering, who are the Fierce Financial Ladies? They are the girls participating in the ING-Girls Inc. Investment Challenge from the Girls Inc. of Holyoke, Mass., affiliate.

“For the past two years, I’ve been volunteering with Girls Inc. of Holyoke, instructing the Fierce Financial Ladies through the investment challenge curriculum and offering guidance about the investment process,” said Thierry Yungenge, senior auditor at the ING Windsor, Conn., office and investment challenge volunteer. “They have really excelled in their learning. Right now, their portfolio is up 6% year-to-date. It’s great to see firsthand how ING is making a difference in these girls’ lives with our focus on financial literacy and empowerment.”

Providing the girls with exposure to the markets and to the fundamentals of investing wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the ING Windsor office to connect with investment professionals who could share their stories about the industry. “As investment professionals from across the ING organization shared their varied career paths, it was evident the investment challenge experience was truly realized for these young ladies through the speakers’ career experiences,” said Bindu Patel, assistant vice president, Manager Research and Selection Group, ING Investment Management and governing board member of the ING-Girls Inc. Investment Challenge.

Guest speakers for the day

On Feb. 21, 2012, employees from ING U.S. and ING Investment Management demonstrated that the corporate and nonprofit business sectors offer a broad array of careers — achievable with a good work ethic, solid educational foundation, confidence and discipline. The speakers included:

  • Maliz Beams, ING U.S. Retirement CEO
  • Judeen Wrinn, ING U.S. Retirement COO
  • Bill Evans, head of Manager Research and Selection, ING Investment Management
  • John Aguilar, vice president and head of Channel & Product Marketing, ING Investment Management
  • Jessica Gilbert, relationship associate, Sales & Client Services, ING Investment Management
  • Heather Neilson, web manager, Institutional Web Marketing, ING Investment Management

“I really enjoyed going to the ING office because we got to learn about the different jobs that go with everything we are learning now,” said Kathleen Fitzgerald, vice president of the Fierce Financial Ladies. “These are jobs we could potentially have in the future.”
