Insight Forums: Use of summary prospectus, social media will reshape financial printing

'Zmags' event description illustrates the trend

Summary

The SEC’s new Summary Prospectus rules and the growing adoption of social media as a shareholder communications channel together are going to radically change the financial printing industry. For example, small summaries combined with online documents, frequent "tweets" and blog posts, and other new means of outreach will mean fewer dollars will be spent on conventional printing, and new technologies will be required to effectively integrate print and electronic communications.

The SEC’s new Summary Prospectus rules and the growing adoption of social media as a shareholder communications channel together are going to radically change the financial printing industry. For example, smaller summaries combined with online documents, frequent "tweets" and blog posts, and other new means of outreach will mean fewer dollars will be spent on conventional printing, and new technologies will be required to effectively integrate print and electronic communications.

To illustrate the point, Insight Forums has created an interactive "Zmag" description of its upcoming Shareholder Communications Symposium and has made it available online at http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/0619a12d#/0619a12d/5. This Zmag is a simplified example of what can be done with such shareholder communications as prospectuses, annual reports, and other traditional print materials. Embedding audio, video, and deep links – this one includes a sample summary prospectus design from Firehouse Financial Communications – it is an extraordinarily effective tool that is environmentally friendly and represents a cornerstone of the future of shareholder communications.

The Shareholder Communications Symposium is an exclusive forum at which senior executives and industry experts will mix, mingle, and learn from each other about best practices for producing shareholder communications that are 'green,' efficient, and cost-effective. The event takes place October 5-7 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago, and agenda and registration information is available on the Web at http://www.insightforums.com/scs09agenda.php.
