(3BL Media) July 27, 2012 - Eastman Chemical Company held a celebratory luncheon today to honor 67 local teachers who completed the Eastman Scholar Mathletes program for the summer of 2012.  These teachers represent 39 schools and seven school systems; Bristol Tennessee City; Hawkins County; Johnson City; Kingsport City; Scott County, Virginia; Sullivan County; and Washington County, Tennessee.

Eastman Scholar Mathletes is a collaborative partnership between Eastman Chemical Company and East Tennessee State University’s Center for Excellence in Math and Science Education. The program provides local elementary and middle school teachers with an opportunity to participate in an intensive two-week summer workshop focused on math education. A Scholar Mathlete from Bristol Tennessee City Schools commented, “Who knew that spending two weeks of summer in a classroom could be so energizing!  The strategies, knowledge, and camaraderie gained are priceless.”

Teachers receive conceptual training, as well as content knowledge training in the workshop.  A Scholar Mathlete from Johnson City Schools remarked, “The class opened my eyes and my mind. Because I have a better understanding of math, my students will have a better understanding of math.”

The workshop also facilitates networking opportunities between teachers from different school systems to spark innovation in the classroom, build upon their own knowledge and develop enhanced teaching strategies. “The interaction among the classmates participating in this program and the opportunity to communicate with them throughout the school year is a priceless resource,” remarked a Scholar Mathlete from Washington County Schools.

The Eastman Scholar Mathletes program was launched in 2007. Since its beginning, the program has produced close to 400 graduates.  The program provides participants with teaching methods that move them away from giving students specific steps and answers and moves them toward encouraging students to discover the answers by problem-solving, which is essential in building higher order thinking skills in students.

"Preparing students for the future is a continual goal at Eastman," said Paul Montgomery, Vice President of Community Relations and Corporate Services. "By providing these teachers with new and exciting ways to build interest in math, students will become more engaged and successful in their studies.”
