With an expansion in eco awareness and the availability of alternative options continuing to increase and gain support, individuals and businesses continue to seek ways to assess the sustainable aspects of various products.  One recent result is the emergence of material rating systems designed to not only set measures for product manufactures to aspire but provide a quick reference guide for consumers to make informed choices.

For manufacturing, these measures are creating immediate incentives for business sustainability improvements.  By expanding the eco awareness of manufacturers and purchasers, there are now defined measures which to aspire.

These product markers will take into account the full lifecycle of the product, from production to disposal.

•    What materials were used in the development of the product?
•    What manufacturing processes were used in the production of the product?
•    Does the product contain materials that could be detrimental to health?
•    Does the product contain materials that could be detrimental to the environment?
•    Is the product recyclable or biodegradable?

As a sustainability consultant, I believe that growing eco awareness and resulting pressure for business sustainability will dictate "the best of the best" products and services will continuously rise to the top and lead consumers further away from the most hazardous material onto more-preferable options.  The key will be consumer engagement.
