Summary
-
Iconic skier and mountaineer for The North Face Athlete team Kit DesLauriers presented at JH Middle School Thursday, Feb. 19, to about 400 students.
-
Climate change important to her because she is a skier/mountaineer, and one of the first people to ski the the Seven Summits. Her success all came down to having snow on each of these peaks. Out of the 7 Summits, she had to do Kilimanjaro twice because it didn't have snow when she went there the first time. She had to go during a storm so there was snow there.
-
Because of such extreme weather patterns, it's hard for her to plan trips. She went to Brooks Range in deep Alaska and couldn't find detailed info on the weather patterns, so she contacted an Eskimo and asked when was the best time to come. The Eskimo said he wasn’t sure since some of the rivers don't even freeze all the way anymore and that the weather patterns had moved back multiple months. Its also hard for the locals that have to rely on the environment for all their food, and now they have no way to plan out and it could change month by month.
-
Kit also talked about kids coming up with good reasons to win the follow through grant. She said “Do something right because you want to do something good for the world: the world is in your hands"
