(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) May 9, 2011 - The report describes how the Group has delivered against its strategy to become the leading global mining company and is making a real difference in host communities.

To achieve its aim to be the leading global mining company, by becoming the investment, the partner and the employer of choice, Anglo American has a strategy focused on:

- Investing - in world class assets in the most attractive commodities;
- Organising - efficiently and effectively;
- Operating - safely, sustainably and responsibly;
- Employing - the best people;

Sustainable development commitments in six areas - operational excellence, zero harm, climate change, water security, benefiting communities and community health - have been identified as being key to delivery of this strategy.

Safety and the vision of an injury-free workplace remains Anglo American’s main priority: the number of workplace deaths has declined by nearly 70% since 2006 and there has been a 50% reduction in the injury rate. A strong focus is placed on partnerships with government and labour for transforming safety performance.

The report highlights the company’s leadership efforts in healthcare and HIV/AIDS and describes how it is using the knowledge and experience gained through these programmes to strengthen community health systems in South Africa. 100,000 people have been tested last year as part of Anglo American’s voluntary counselling and testing programme.

During 2010, the company invested $111m in social projects and extended its flagship enterprise development initiative, Zimele, beyond South Africa to Chile and Brazil where it has key operations and projects. The company has committed to creating and sustaining 15,000 additional jobs in up to 1,500 new businesses by 2015.

On the environmental front, water scarcity is a major issue for Anglo American. 72% of its operations are hosted in water-stressed areas and as an energy-intensive company, climate change poses significant risks. The report summarises its new water and climate change strategies which focus initially on internal improvements to leadership beyond operational borders.
