Southwest Airlines has introduced a new airplane cabin design that uses environmentally responsible products to reduce waste and improve fuel efficiency. The cabin refresh features recyclable carpet and a more eco-friendly seat that weighs less. At the same time, the makeover enhances comfort for fliers by increasing under-seat room for carryon luggage. Southwest’s upgrade increases the durability of onboard materials, but without added costs. The new interior was developed based on research provided by Southwest’s “Green Plane,” a test project launched by Southwest in 2009 to pioneer onboard eco-friendly products.

The Mining Association of Canada has reported progress on corporate social responsibility by Canadian mining, oil, and gas companies in developing countries. Of the 27 recommendations in 2007 by an advisory group, the new report indicated that 18 have been fully or partially implemented. Areas of progress include the Government of Canada’s participation in the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, and in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. The report, commissioned by MAC’s International Social Responsibility Committee, included comments and data from representatives of industry, investors, human rights, academics, and government.
