CAMPAIGN: Veterans Day

We recently featured a blog that shared some of the best places in the country for veterans to find jobs. The original article with best places for veterans who are just starting out, mid-career and recently retired veterans came from USAA and Hiring Our Heroes. It has so much great information to share with veterans and their families and is definitely worth a read. For a complete list of the variables and methodology, go here.

Today’s blog features information about the best places for recently retired veterans to find the best jobs with military-friendly companies whether or not they choose to continue their career.

The first two spots hail from the great state of Texas. Number one: San Antonio – which you’ve already seen in the first two posts as a great place to be for veterans. Low unemployment and cost-of-living, plus its status as  “Military City U.S.A.,” make it a good choice for recently retired veterans. The second largest metro in Texas and nearby Air Force facilities create a strong military presence. Top employment for veterans is with the government.

The number two location is Austin, TX. Austin residents enjoy a strong economy, education opportunities, attractive housing options, a relatively pleasant climate and abundant activities. Area highlights include the University of Texas, an important music scene and a large tech industry. Austin also has a low unemployment rate at just 5.2% and some great employers like Golfsmith and Green Mountain Energy.

Heading north for the number three best spot for recently retired veterans to find jobs: Madison, WI. I might be a bit biased, since it’s where I went to college, but it’s a beautiful place to call home. The city is surrounded by Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, and the walkable downtown shows evidence of its twin roles as state government center and college town. It’s also central to some great employers, including Alliant Energy and Schneider National, as well as trade and high tech organizations.
