AECOM Young Engineers Volunteer in India — Flames for Your Chai

Campaign: Cities for People
Three young AECOM engineers participated in Pollinate Energy's Young Professionals Program to help the non-profit work toward its goal to eradicate energy poverty in India by empowering local entrepreneurs.

"Approximately 1 in 6 city dwellers living in slums across India lacks adequate (or, in some cases, any) access to education, health care, financial stability and products that can mitigate some of the risks associated with slum living," said Rosanna Sanderson, an environmental engineer based in AECOM's Brisbane, Australia, office.

As part of the inaugural group of AECOM engineers that participated in Pollinate Energy's Young Professionals Program, Sanderson and two other colleagues helped the non-profit work toward its goal to eradicate energy poverty in India and empower local entrepreneurs by selling solar lights and cookstoves.

Continues Sanderson, "Seeing the impact even a simple solar light can make to a child’s education is proof enough that this kind of social enterprise is one of the pieces in a complex web of creating systematic social change."

Check out "Flames for your chai" in AECOM's Connected Cities blog to learn more about Sanderson's experience.
