October 2, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Barrick Gold Corporation was named a carbon disclosure leader in Canada by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for the fourth consecutive year.

The achievement was announced in the CDP Canada 200 Climate Report 2013 (PDF), which tracks how Canada’s largest companies are responding to climate change.

Barrick was named to the CDP Canada Climate Disclosure Leadership Index, which is comprised of the top 10 percent of companies with the highest carbon disclosure scores from among 200 major Canadian companies.

“We are proud to be recognized for our carbon emissions disclosure and energy management practices,” says Bill Williams, Barrick’s Vice President of Environment. “We’re focused on continually improving our carbon disclosure and energy efficiency initiatives at our mine sites and offices. This recognition from the CDP reaffirms that we’re on the right track.”

Barrick improved its greenhouse gas emissions last year by more than 294,000 metric tons from business as usual and reduced its energy use by 3.5 million gigajoules as a result of energy efficiency projects, a number of which were initiated in 2012.

CDP promotes transparency on carbon-related issues, such as governance, climate change strategy and initiatives, and greenhouse gas emissions. It is the only global climate change reporting system and involves disclosure of climate change strategies by more than 6,000 of the world’s largest companies.
