CAMPAIGN: Fighting Rural Hunger

Feeding America and its nationwide network of food banks have named September as “Hunger Action Month” – to help people take action in their local communities to help end hunger in America. And today, Sept. 5, is Hunger Action Day.

Think we don’t have a hunger problem here?

In 2011, more than 50 million Americans lived in food insecure households. Almost 17 million of them were children.

Food insecurity exists in every county in America, ranging from 2.4 percent in Slope County, North Dakota, to more than 35 percent in Holmes County, Mississippi.

Seven states have significantly higher levels of food insecurity than the national average – Mississippi (19.2 percent), Arkansas (19.2 percent), Texas (18.5 percent), Alabama (18.2 percent), Georgia (17.4 percent), North Carolina (17.1 percent), and California (16.2 percent). The U.S. national average is 14.7 percent.

Nearly 14 million children are served by Feeding America, and more than three million of them are under the age of five.

Rural hunger exists in many of the same regions that are major food-producing areas. Rural hunger rates are generally lower than urban rates but higher than the national average.

Most of us and our families in the United States don’t know what it’s like to go to bed hungry. But too many of us do.

Feeding America has some suggestions for what actions we as individuals can take.
