Philanthropy & Cause Initiatives

The Corporate Champions for Education
Accelerating global leadership development, building the capacity of nonprofit organizations to better meet their missions, gaining insight into rapidly growing markets, engaging employees, and developing authentic reputations for Corporate Social Responsibility—all of these are reasons for companies to engage in international skills-based volunteering, otherwise known as Global Pro Bono.

With backing from SAP, PYXERA Global has immediate openings for participants in the Global Pro Bono program Corporate Champions for Education, a multi-company collaborative approach.

Partnering for Disaster Preparedness in Chile
The term “natural disaster” is a misnomer. Natural ecosystems often require disturbances such as fires and floods to remain healthy. They have an inherent resilience to the occasional battering. Crises created by destructive natural events might be more aptly referred to as “social disasters,” because of the toll of life and economic damage left in their wake. Framing such events as social disasters places them in a different light, shifting the burden on all sectors of society to proactively manage the threat.

Sustainable Development Goals

Moving Beyond the Role of Token Women
Leading up to International Women’s Day, the Brookings Institution partnered with the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security and the U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council to host a panel on “The New Generation of Afghan Women Leaders,” featuring several members of a delegation from the Afghan government.

Education

The Right to Education Index
As of 2013, 59 million children are still missing out on primary school—and not because they’re playing hooky. Although the Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have prompted increases in primary school enrollment worldwide, gaps remain in achieving the right to education for all, particularly related to education quality and completion of secondary education. For youth entering the workforce, the gaps result in limited employable skills. Given current education trends, youth unemployment rates will continue to grow at critical rates.

Sustainable Development Goals

Beyond Helping Hands
Who among us doesn’t remember the ubiquitous TV ads produced by the Christian Children’s Fund and Save the Children? Their images of children in dangerous states of malnutrition with the toll-free number at the bottom encouraging viewers to make a donation today to save lives were splashed across televisions throughout the United States. It was easy to think that the best way to end hunger was to give money. But what if the ads had mentioned that nearly one third of the world’s food is wasted or lost annually? How would you want to help then? What if more money wasn’t making enough of a difference?

The Rise of Social Enterprise in New Zealand
More and more, citizens and consumers are becoming socially and environmentally aware, and want their purchasing decisions to reflect their beliefs. In a capitalist society, social enterprise provides consumers with a form of activism as organizations with a social purpose open up an alternative for consumers to spend their money responsibly rather than on goods or services that ultimately perpetuate the growing global wealth disparity.

The Timberland X Thread Partnership
The unbridled accumulation of single-use, post-consumer plastic bottles represents a social and environmental crisis affecting populations and landscapes the world over. While industrialized countries have evolved systems and customs that effectively displace this waste stream, the problem is glaringly evident in less-industrialized countries, ill-equipped to control the flow.
