International Women's Day & Beyond: A Call to Business Leaders

Increasingly, companies are understanding that a more diverse workforce is more innovative, better understands its customers, and outperforms the competition. In fact, companies with more gender-diverse talent pools have 15 per cent higher returns. We’re on our way, but progress still needs to be made. Studies show the gender gap won’t close until the year 2186 – 170 years is too long to wait! As we band together and vow to make a difference this International Women’s Day, let's truly #BeBoldForChange and help forge a better working world for everyone. We, as companies, have an incredible opportunity to raise women up — through the ranks — and create a gender diverse workforce that benefits all our people, as well as the bottom line.

When Personal Passions & Purpose at Work Pair Up
A few weeks ago, I came home from a meeting at Chic Geek (a Calgary-based community to support women interested in tech) and opened my laptop to find an email from Benevity’s CEO, Bryan de Lottinville. At first, I thought it was an office-wide notice. Then I saw my name alongside a handful of female leaders from different teams, whom I admire. So I re-read the email carefully. Bryan asked us to put our heads together and see how we can partner with Chic Geek, the very same group that I volunteer with and had just returned from a meeting with! He explained how supporting Chic Geek aligned closely with Benevity's goals of improving our local tech-landscape, especially for women.

Confessions of an Aspiring Work-Life Ninja
After combating severe sleep debt, major diaper malfunctions, nap schedules and breastfeeding woes, I thought long and hard about whether I wanted to return to work before the end of my year-long protected leave (yay, Canada!). Did I really want to leave the tiny love of my life in the care of someone else (in this case, Daddy) so I could set my alarm every day, commute through busy morning traffic to sit in meetings and navigate heavy workloads?

Infographic | The Future of Women in the Workplace
Gender equality is now a top priority for 78% of companies (up from 56% in 2012), yet less than half of employees feel we’re doing enough. While the pay gap (for equal work) is closing, the promotion gap isn’t, leaving women making 76 cents on the dollar compared to men. And the gender gap isn’t expected to close for another 170 years. That’s too long to wait!

A Call to Business Leaders: We Have a Job to Do This International Women’s Day
Today is International Women’s Day and we are being called on to #BeBoldForChange. Why, you might ask, is a middle-aged, white male CEO writing about International Women’s Day? The truth is that I believe I am part of the problem, and I’m determined to do something about it.
