Schneider Electric | We Believe That Access to Energy is a Basic Human Right

Involving local stakeholders

Whether rolling out rural electrification capabilities using solar microgrids or installing solar lighting in remote communities, we never stop at project implementation. Our goal is to provide efficient, sustainable technologies that communities can maintain for years.

Collaboration is key to achieving this vision. To that end, our Access to Energy program actively involves local stakeholders, including residents and customers, to bring — and sustain — safe, clean electricity to communities.

These collaborative efforts include:

  • Offers and business models for the design and deployment of adequate electrical distribution offers via off-grid solutions
  • Impact investment funds for innovative local energy entrepreneurship
  • Training (both technical and business) to address local skill shortages

As proof of our commitment, we are running programs around the globe to help get electricity to the people who need it: http://sdreport.schneider-electric.com/en/community-access-energy/

Sustainable Development Goals

A Four-Step Plan for Quickly Building Access to Energy in Remote, Rural Areas
Schneider Electric takes its commitment to Access to Energy programs very seriously. By 2020, we are committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, of “Ending poverty in all its forms everywhere” and “Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all”. Between 2025-2050, we commit to benefitting 50 million additional people with our Access to Energy offers and to training 1,000,000 underprivileged people in energy management.

Sustainable Development Goals

Bold Ideas for Financing and Regulations to Close the Energy Gap
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 calls for universalaccess to affordable, reliable and modern energy services by the year 2030. 1.1 billion people worldwide still have no access to electricity. That’s nearly equivalent to the U.S and European population combined. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that, unless electrification efforts are further accelerated, by 2030 a total of 674 million people will still be without access to electricity.

Schneider Electric WHITEPAPER | Discover Why Helping Entrepreneurs in the Energy Field Can Contribute to Reaching a More Sustainable Development
According to The United Nations University World Institute, entrepreneurship is a “resource process and state of being through and in which individuals utilize opportunities in the market by creating and growing business firms”. It can notably be key to addressing Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 8 of the UN, to ensure sustainable employment and lasting energy solutions. Thus, it needs crucial supporting actions from the International Community and local governments.

Ashoka and Schneider Electric Foundation Support Social Entrepreneurs to Tackle European Fuel Poverty
In the past decade, fuel poverty has become a major challenge in Europe, where 50 to 125 million people are considered to be living in fuel poverty. One of the most serious consequences of fuel poverty is related to health. Insufficient heating affects the living conditions and health of households. Then, the poor insulation of houses, combined with inappropriate secondary heating, affects greenhouse gas emissions.

Education

For the First Time, Technology in the Classroom is Accessible in Nigeria, with the Help of Schneider Electric and Solar Power
Today, about 1.1 billion people in the world live without electricity. Another billion have unreliable power and 2.8 billion people use coal, wood, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and cleaning. Today, Schneider Electric is transforming the lives of millions of people in Nigeria by partnering with Microsoft and the Lagos State Electricity Board to provide sustainable solar power to over 200 schools and clinics.

VIDEO | Schneider Electric Uses Solar Power to Illuminate Primary Schools for 45K Students in Africa
Today nearly 1.3 billion people — almost 1 of every 5 persons on the planet — lack access to modern energy. Almost all live in poverty in rural sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, unconnected to utility networks. Many companies offer stand-alone solar powered systems and mini-grid solutions, but the target communities often cannot afford the purchase price and lack the know-how to operate the systems. There are elements of a successful, sustainable approach to rural electrification projects, with examples of innovative business models and a case study of Schneider Electric’s Access to Energy program.
