Celeste Phillips believes that working for someone else forces you to put your own dreams on hold. But working for yourself, she said, allows you to fulfill your dreams. That’s why she started Big LuLu’s Trucking LLC, a construction and hauling company in Pittsburgh. Before starting her own business, Phillips said she knew people who owned dump trucks, so she learned the business from them.

Battling a ‘Mountain of Hunger’ With Every Meal
During the cold, winter months, Christina Harris is glad she isn’t forced to choose between heat and food for her family. Each day, her children, along with nearly 1,700 others in their area, get a hot meal through Kids Café, a program of Feeding the Valley Food Bank in Midland, Georgia. Watch the video.

Wells Fargo Sparks Diverse Small Business Growth Across U.S. by Fulfilling $75 Million Lending and Grant Commitment
Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) announced it has exceeded its initial $75 million commitment for the Wells Fargo Works for Small Business: Diverse Community Capital program by awarding $13 million in lending capital and grants to 19 Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) in the latest round of the program. The CDFIs, which are nonprofit financial institutions, use the funds to deliver affordable financial products to diverse small business owners who do not typically have access to conventional financing.

Supporting the Largest Habitat for Humanity Development in Colorado
About two years ago, Wells Fargo team member Michael Dunn had an idea. While speaking to team members in Community Development in Denver, he asked if the company had ever sponsored an entire house with local affiliate Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver. Nothing came of the conversation at the time, but the Community Development team asked him about it last year. This time, the idea became reality.

Improving Quality of Life by Bringing Nature Into the City
A $200,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Wells Fargo will improve water quality, increase tree canopy and create local jobs in Albuquerque. The three-part project is an integral piece of The Nature Conservancy’s Urban Conservation Program designed to bring more nature into the city to improve quality of life.

Five Clean-Tech Startups Added to Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator
The Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator (IN2), a technology incubator and platform funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation and co-administered by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, has selected the fourth round of clean-tech and energy efficiency startup companies to join the program.

Transforming Inner-City Youth — Mind, Body, and Food Literacy
At the peak of his teen rebellion in high school, De’shawn Woolridge left home and lived out of his car for a while, until his life was transformed with the help of a nonprofit agency and its after-school programs.

Woolridge said he found direction in his life with the help of Success Through Self Academy, or STS, a nonprofit that provided after-school programs for inner-city youth in Pittsburg, California. He flourished in its multimedia program, while living temporarily in STS’ parking lot at its main location.

How Two Women Fought to Save Their Former Home
Rufaro Jenkins still fondly remembers celebrating her daughter’s first birthday at her home at Parkway Overlook Apartments in Washington, D.C. — along with the birthdays, proms, and graduations of the other kids who lived there. She and other residents were forced to relocate when poor living conditions and failed inspections closed the buildings in 2008. Even so, Jenkins and others have fought for the last 10 years to bring the apartment community back to life — and keep it affordable
