Creating Local Hiring Opportunities at Peñasquito

We are always looking local for new hires in the communities surrounding our operations. Employment is one of the ways Goldcorp helps develop local economies and build strong community relationships. In 2017 our Peñasquito mine saw substantial success in this regard.

In collaboration with National Employment Service (State Government), Peñasquito’s local hiring strategy began with the publication of job vacancies in the 19 communities of direct influence to the operation, followed by an on-site recruitment and selection process. Tours were also conducted in the surrounding communities to promote the vacancies still available. In 2017, two Job Fairs were organized in the municipalities of Mazapil and Concepción del Oro.

Additionally, a recruitment office was installed at the access point to Peñasquito mine, where all interested community members could get more information. Following the initial influx of applicants, a second phase was initiated, which included field visits to all the surrounding communities. Recruiters were successfully able to communicate the positions that were still available and connect the interested candidates with the Peñasquito mine.

As a result of this strategy, the local labour pool has increased and Peñasquito is seeing higher rates of local employment as well as improved reputation in the local area. The number of local candidates increased from 25% in January 2017 to 43% by December 2017. At the end of 2017, we successfully reached (and surpassed) our 20% local hiring goal (from the communities in our area of influence).  In total, more than 500 people from the surrounding communities were hired and trained through this program.

The local recruitment office exceeded the expectations of the program as well, receiving more than 1,200 calls and conducting 750 interviews during 2017. A database has also been created for future human resourcing needs.
