CAMPAIGN: Sealed Air’s 2016 Sustainability Report

Imagine starting every business day by putting a match to a bundle of currency – thousands of dollars, maybe more, gone. It certainly wouldn’t make sense. And yet every day, businesses do just that - by producing and perpetuating waste. Every move a company makes leaves behind waste - whether it be greenhouse gas emissions, unused labor, damaged goods, spoiled food. At Sealed Air, we’re determined to eliminate waste, not just in our operations, but in our customers’ as well.

I mention this by way of introducing you to Sealed Air’s 2016 Sustainability Report. We believe that at its core, sustainability equates to the reduction – ultimately, the elimination – of waste. And that, in turn, requires that we manage our resources and costs with maximum efficiency.

In 2015, Sealed Air established our 2020 Sustainability Goals, those we intended to achieve in the ensuing five years. We organized those goals around three pillars: reducing our footprint, re-imagining customer solutions and benefiting society. Collectively, they’re designed to improve the efficiency of our operations and I’m pleased to report that we’ve made substantial progress around each of them. The items in this year's report illustrate that progress.

Eliminating waste requires vigilance, knowledge and imagination, driven by the steadfast belief that there always is a better, more efficient way of doing things. Today, new technologies are paving the way in ways few could have imagined just a decade ago. Big data and the Internet of Things, to name just two, are transforming the way we operate, providing new depth to the quality of our customer insights and enhancing the efficiency of our operations.

But our focus, clearly, isn’t limited to driving waste out of our own operations; it’s at the heart of everything we do, from the innovative solutions we’ve developed to help food processors meet growing market demands for lower prices, higher product quality and improved sustainability, to new packaging solutions that reflect the explosive impact e-commerce has had on the retail industry. We’re also working with the several thousand vendors we do business with to improve the efficiency of our supply chain.

Purging waste from our operations and providing solutions to our customers that help them improve the efficiency of their operations not only enhances profitability, but also helps protect the environment. Reducing water and energy intensity, for example, is good for business and good for the planet. Sustainability, from a business perspective, is not an either/or proposition. We believe that sustainability makes good business sense.

Finally, I want to call out the outstanding contributions of our 23,000 employees, whose energy, dedication and creativity are propelling the progress we’ve made toward achieving our 2020 Sustainability Goals. I’m proud of them, and I’m proud of our progress.
